Last year was tough for the majority of us, but each new year comes with a fresh slate and a new perspective. As adults, we like to feel prepared for the transition into a new season, so why wouldn’t our kids feel the same way? Whether it is breaking out that new planner or creating new resolutions, we all like to set ourselves up for success. Here are some tips to help your child with ADHD transition smoothly into the new year:
Use Small Successes
With every accomplishment comes a moment of pride, no matter how big or small that accomplishment may have been. One thing that can help your child start each day on the right foot is setting them up for small successes, first thing in the morning. For example, you can encourage your child to make their bed every day. Although making the bed may seem small, this task is something they can take control of, and it can set the tone for your child’s day. No matter how the rest of their day turns out, coming home to this accomplishment will give them a sense of peace.
Talk It Out
Change can be stressful for kids with ADHD. That's why communication is key! Be sure to have a conversation with your child at the beginning of the year to discuss their excitement, possible fears, and personal goals for the quarter/semester. For example, if your child is a little nervous about a new teacher or classroom, this conversation can allow you to talk about the layout of the school or the teachers they may have. Discussing a game plan together will not only help you understand how to better support your child (and involve teachers if necessary), but will also help your child feel heard and rallied around. Communication promotes growth. Talking with your child about school at the beginning of the year could make all the difference in your relationship with them, and in how the quarter/semester goes.
Stick to a Schedule
A schedule is a very helpful tool whether you are 5 or 75, and especially if you have ADHD! Scheduling out the different aspects of your day helps you to make the time to accomplish necessary tasks, and find some time to have some fun in between. This is no different for your child. Having a schedule will not only put their minds at ease, but yours as well!

Be Consistent With Bed Time
It's always hard to change sleep schedules after a big break! As the new year is upon us, be sure to stick to that bedtime routine. Provide the Right Tools
Before your child returns to the classroom (virtual or not) it is important that they have all of the tools they need to succeed! Be sure that you have those pencils sharpened, binders stacked, books ready, and a virtual learning space cleared if necessary.ADHD can cause challenges when it comes to learning, so you might need to add some new, ADHD-specific tools to your tool box.
